Thoughts on Yowamushi Pedal: The Movie

For those who watched the Yowamushi Pedal anime series and enjoyed the thrill of its inter-high competition, you might be as disappointed in this movie as I was. This movie takes place after the inter-high competition and the different school teams met once again to participate in a smaller scale race. Here's a fact: not every character from the series will appear in the movie.

Before I continue, let me warn you that I will not try to spoil it.

What I didn't like most about the movie is how it rushed through the races. Given the limited time, you really shouldn't expect much. The movie is about an hour and 30 minutes long. What kind of adrenaline rush can they offer? For those who have never watched the series, the rider's hidden skills and abilities may also seem confusing. I think this is a movie for fans of the Yowamushi Pedal series, not for casual movie buffs. Or maybe you've always thought that way...

Still, Yowamushi Pedal: The Movie offers insight into some of the things you might have missed when watching the two seasons of the anime series. Because the series put so much time and effort into building the character of the Sohoku freshmen, I didn't really realize how deeply attached the youngsters were to their respective mentors: their elders. When Makishima began acting strangely and subsequently dropped out of the club, it was his apprentice Onoda who felt the biggest impact.

Perhaps it was the natural character of Onoda who is not as sure as he should have felt this impact. If it's Naruko or Imaizumi, maybe the result will be different. His fellow freshmen are more self-confident. Seemingly losing his sense of direction and purpose in the cycling club, Onoda struggled with his training and on race day as well. Onoda's strength isn't really his high cadence driving ability if that's the correct way to describe his most valuable skill set. His strength lies in his loyalty to his teammates. His strength lies in his enjoyment of riding with all of his teammates. Any of them lost, lost the value of it. That's Onoda.
